Københavner Cafeen - Copenhagen

Denmark isn't typically known for it's cuisine. The most I'd heard of before taking a trip to the beautiful city of Copenhagen was Danish pastries. But Denmark has a rich and nostalgic relationship with food. This, I learned on a free walking tour around the city. The guide spoke of how the Danish will flock to the same dishes over and over because it's what they grew up with, and the dish pictured above was one of the most traditional dishes you could get.

Københavner Cafeen was recommended to me by the tour guide. I wanted something authentic, and since I took the trip in January, I needed something that would keep me warm in the freezing temperatures.

The dish (or more like platter) I chose was Flæskesteg. Considered to be Denmark's principle national dish, Flæskesteg is roast pork and crackling slices traditionally served with two kinds of potato (New and caramelised), red cabbage, and topped with orange slices. The dish is commonly served on Christmas Day.

After double-checking with the waiter that it wasn't actually a sharing platter (although I doubt that would have even mattered, it is me) I ordered this Danish delicacy.

I had a slight fear that this would be a case of quantity over quality, but I was over-the-moon to be incorrect on that. The pork was tender and very lightly seasoned to make a juicy and fantastic centrepiece. The caramelised potatoes were sweet and buttery making them a great combination with the rich pork. The red onion and apple sauce accompaniments added some extra textures and sweet tastes to the dish. I found the best way to eat this was to cut a bit of pork, put a generous dollop of apple sauce over it, and then a bit of the caramelised potato on top. The mouthful makes for the most delicious meaty, yet sweet and tangy taste.

I was incredibly impressed with the meal and the presentation from Københavner Cafeen. The staff were lovely, the food was spectactular, and the cosy feel of the restaurant made me feel so relaxed I could have been sitting in my own living room.
