Wahaca - Edinburgh

During the Fringe, Edinburgh becomes a bit of a nightmare. It's crowded, loud, and getting anywhere in the city centre takes double the time in August than at any other time of year. Spending a day wandering around during the festival will leave anyone feeling tired and deflated. Luckily a quick dinner-time stop at Wahaca provided the perfect pick-me-up after a busy day.

Wahaca serves vibrant and contemporary Mexican dishes with options to suit everyone. You can choose from street-food style smaller dishes, bigger plates, salads & healthier options, and set menus. All of these come with veggie options.

My Meal

The Mexico City Nachos - Tortilla chips, melted cheese, salsa, tomatillo, and avo dressing. (£4.75)

These nachos were a delicious and light start to the meal. I often find that nachos can be a bit too heavy and, for lack of a better work, stodgy. But the Mexico City Nachos were right on the mark with their thin and crispy chips, light creamy cheese, and delicious avocado dressing topped with herbs. The stripped pickled onion added an acidic element which blended well with the creamy cheese.

Sweet Potato and Feta Taquito - with caramelised onion, salsas, and chipotle mayo in a blue corn tortilla. (£4.75)

This was my favourite dish from the meal. The sweet and crispy tubular shell was filled with delicious caramelised onion and covered in feta cheese. The sweet taste of the shell and the onion inside was complemented perfectly with the rich and strong taste of feta, as well as the mix of textures in the mouth being a delight. The slightly spicy chipotle mayo added an element of heat to the bite, which gave a mouthful of this fantastic plate a new dimension.

Devon Crab and Avocado Tostada - With habenero mayo and pickled onions. (£5.75)

I absolutely adore all seafood, crab in particular as I have fond memories of spending the summer holidays cooking it with my grandad while at school. The crab in this dish is served cold and lightly salted, just enough to bring out extra flavour, but not too much as to overpower the already delicious crab. The thick chunks of avocado add an earthy flavour and texture which, mixed with the fresh crab, provides the best of both land and sea in one small dish.

Pork Pibil Tacos - Slow cooked in citrus spices with pickled onions. (£4.85)

This dish was hot, if you like spice then you will like these tacos. The tender and juicy pulled pork is marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce. This definitely isn't first date food as I had the sauce running all over my hands, but the taste was worth it. They don't skimp out on the filling either, these tacos are packed full with the delicious pork, along with pinto beans and garnishing.

Chocolate and Pecan Brownie - With Caramel Ice Cream. (£5.85)

There is always room for dessert. This chocolate explosion was right up my street. Upon being a little disappointed at the size when it first arrived in front of me, I soon realised how dense and rich it was. The pecans added a caramel crunch making the brownie rich and sweet. A truly gorgeous dessert and end the meal.

I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Wahaca while in Edinburgh.
